Is Mobile Web Dead?

Is mobile web dead?

Some colleagues and I were discussing/debating the need for native mobile app. vs. mobile web. It dawned on me that mobile web maybe sunsetting.

IMHO, if it was not already sunsetting, it should -- simply because (1) m-version (mobile-version; m.*.com) of the website is usually half-baked, limited in functionality, or worst, fell behind in regular maintenance, (2) For frequent visited websites, I have already got used to the site's setup, orientation, or navigation.

Objectively, the initial need for mobile web is diminishing as the handset OS and UI advanced. Recall, mobile web blossomed when smartphone becoming the mainstream of handset, but due to the limited screen sizes and lack of decent input method. Mobile web simplified site navigation with minimal need for keyboard input, large button, narrow and short pages, etc. While these advantages remains to be valid, the smartphone handsets have improved drastically over the past 5 years. The larger screen size, the universal touch screen, the intuitive manual/auto. zooming making the navigation of most websites comfortably on a phone. The introduction of iPhone is the enabler for all these.

Now, if I have a choice between m.something.com vs. the regular www.something.com, I'd choose the latter. Unfortunately, www.something.com redirects me to m.something.com once they see my browser agent. .... I need to found something to masquerade my web agent.
